Position Overview & Specifications

Materials Engineer (Welding or Corrosion Focus)

We are looking for highly motivated and enthusiastic Materials Engineers to join us on a permanent basis, based from our offices at Gloucester Business Park.

We are particularly interested in hearing from candidates with experience in welding metallurgy or corrosion engineering, as you will be taking a lead role in proactively managing in-service degradation of systems and components on our nuclear power stations.

If this role sounds right for you, we’d love to hear from you!

Applications for this role close: 7th June 2023

Pay, benefits and culture

We can offer a competitive salary from £40,069 - £71,779 dependent on experience and you’ll be appointed based on the parameters outlined in the Nuclear Generation Company Agreement as well as your existing salary, competence, experience and qualifications. This is a full-time position, however we will be happy to discuss options regarding part-time flexibility and job share if you would like to highlight this on your application.

At EDF, everyone’s welcome. We strive to create an inclusive and diverse environment where everyone has a voice and where you feel confident being yourself. We’re committed to equality, diversity and inclusion. We’d like our future workforce to have an equal gender balance, represent a broad mix of people from minority ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQ+, those with a disability and supporting social mobility. We’re a disability confident employer and we’ll do all we can to help with your application, making adjustments as you need.

We’ll value the difference you bring and offer opportunities for you to thrive and succeed.

What you’ll be doing

Working in the Materials Group within Structural Integrity Branch, you will be expected to take a lead role in overseeing relevant manufacturing aspects and proactively managing in-service degradation of systems and components on our nuclear power stations. This includes the expectation that you will undertake some activities at our power station sites, particularly during scheduled outages or emergent plant breakdowns.

Depending on your particular skills set, the role will include some combination of:

  • Providing advice on all aspects of weld fabrication, including assessing WPS submissions for new and replacement welded components, supporting manual and automated welding activities, and developing repair methodologies for in-service components, all in close liaison with suppliers of welding services.
  • Monitoring the performance of in-service welded components, including delivering outage inspection programmes for welds in steam, feed and gas plant systems, and performing metallurgical assessments of inspection results.
  • Assessing corrosion defects, advising on corrosion prevention measures, contributing to corrosion-related materials selection and repair decisions, and providing technical evaluations of corrosion mechanisms to inform plant safety cases and asset management strategies.
  • Providing central oversight of the fleet corrosion management programme, setting consistent standards for risk-based inspection regimes and defect sentencing, monitoring trends in corrosion defects and remediation across the fleet, and delivering in-house training / communications to promote best practice tools and techniques for corrosion management.

Who you are

You will hold at least a HNC (or equivalent) in Materials, Metallurgy, Welding or Corrosion Engineering. A degree or higher-level qualification (e.g. MSc, PhD, EWF/IIW Welding Diploma) in these subjects or relevant professional accreditation (e.g. Chartered Engineer, Institute Member) would be advantageous.

You will have experience of solving materials-related problems in an operational or production-focussed industrial environment (note: it is emphasised that the advertised vacancy is not an R&D role).

Your technical expertise will include a strong knowledge of ferrous metallurgy and degradation mechanisms relevant to power plant systems and components, supplemented by additional specialisms in either welding or corrosion.

Experience of supporting in-service degradation management programmes and overseeing welding or corrosion related activities at large-scale industrial facilities (e.g. nuclear / conventional / renewable generators or petrochemical installations) would be advantageous.

As this is a vital role, you will ideally have at least 5 – 10 years relevant experience, with the ability to make risk-informed judgements taking into account safety and commercial factors, and build effective relationships with operational customers and suppliers.

A questioning attitude to ensure all work is undertaken to standards consistent with company safety and quality assurance procedures is essential, as are excellent teamwork and communication skills, including the ability to produce high quality technical reports in clear English.
